Can you insulate the walls of a house that's already built?

Wall insulation in Norwalk, CA, for a house that's already standing usually means drill and fill. We drill small holes into each empty wall cavity, the hollow space between the studs, blow insulation in and seal the holes, so your rooms hold their heat and cool air better without the walls coming apart.

If the attic insulation is already done and some rooms still run hot in the afternoon or feel drafty along the outside walls, the walls are often what's left, especially in older houses built before anyone filled them. What moves the price is how many walls we're filling, how many cavities hold a fireplace, ducts or built-ins that need special entry holes or have to stay empty, and whether something has to be fixed before we start. The schedule mostly turns on that last part, because old wiring that needs an electrician comes first, and your written estimate lays out every step in the order it should happen.

How we handle wall insulation

Before anyone drills, I find out what wiring is in your walls and which cavities hold a fireplace, chimney, lights, ducts or built-ins, so we leave the ones that should stay empty alone. Then our crew drills small holes into the cavities that are safe to fill and blows in loose insulation through a hose, which works well in oddly shaped spaces and around things tucked inside the wall. We take our time on each stud bay, the space between two studs, so it's packed full and dense and less likely to settle and leave a cold gap at the top. After that we seal the holes, clean up, and I look over the work before we call it done.

Packed insulation slows air inside each bay, but it can't reach the leaks at the rim joist where the house sits on the foundation, between floors or where the walls meet the roof, so we close those with our air sealing services, which means closing gaps before or alongside the insulation. Masonry walls and walls below ground are a separate job too, since the cellulose industry's trade group doesn't recommend filling them with cellulose, and that's where basement insulation comes in.

What shapes wall insulation in Norwalk

California's Energy Code sets some standards by climate zone, including standards for a house's outer shell and for its windows and doors, and a Norwalk home follows the zone its address sits in. I work out which zone applies to your address before I write the estimate, so the plan for your walls fits your house and not a general chart.

Around here we mostly fill the walls of older single-story houses that went up with nothing in them, and a lot of them have a fireplace wall, a wall heater or built-in cabinets that change where we can drill. We see the same houses on jobs in Downey and Bellflower, and we handle them the same way, by marking those cavities before the drill comes out.

What happens after you call about your walls?

  1. Call us or send the form

You call (562) 307-9042 or send the form, and we get back to you to set up a visit. Tell us if tenants live in the house so we can plan around them.

  2. I come look at your walls

I come out myself and check the wiring, the fireplace and chimney, ducts, built-ins, gas appliances and any leaks that have to be fixed first. You get a written estimate that lists the work in the order it should happen.

  3. Our crew fills the walls

Once you say go, we check with the office that covers your address and take care of any permit the job needs. Our installers fill the walls bay by bay while I check in along the way.

  4. We clean up and walk through

We seal the holes and clean up after ourselves. Then I walk you through which walls we filled and which ones we left empty on purpose.

Why Norwalk homeowners call Precision Norwalk Insulation Services for wall insulation

  • I look at every job myself

I come out to see your walls and write the estimate, and our installers do the work with me checking in along the way. The person who planned your job is the one making sure it gets done that way.

  • Fixes come before the fill

Before we started this business in 2023, I spent years keeping rental houses in working order and saw plenty of insulation blown in over leaks and bad wiring. If something needs fixing first, I'll tell you, because filling a wall over a problem means paying twice.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. That counts on a job where we're drilling into walls that have wiring behind them.

  • Landlords and tenants kept informed

We're based in Norwalk and work for homeowners, landlords and property managers across southeast Los Angeles County and north Orange County. When tenants live in the house, we make sure they know which rooms we'll be in and when.

On a wall job, what matters most is knowing what's behind the drywall before we drill. Get in touch and I'll come take a look.

Questions about wall insulation in Norwalk

How much does blown-in insulation cost around Los Angeles?

Blown-in insulation in the Los Angeles area usually costs about $1,600 to $3,600 per project. That's the going rate in the area, not a quote from us, and a wall job lands higher or lower depending on how many walls you're filling and what's inside them. Your own number comes from the estimate after I've seen the house.

How do I get my walls insulated without tearing them open?

Drill and fill does it through small holes, so no drywall has to come off. It's a common way to insulate the walls of older homes in a mild climate like ours, which fits a lot of the houses around Norwalk.

Is blown-in insulation safe with older wiring or a fireplace?

Not always, which is why we check first. A cellulose maker's guide says to keep insulation out of stud bays that hold a fireplace, recessed lights or a chimney, and to put none in a home that uses knob and tube wiring, the old wiring run on porcelain knobs. If you don't know what's in your walls, I'll find out at the visit, and if it's knob and tube, an electrician needs to come before we do.

Who can insulate walls in California?

A contractor holding California's insulation and acoustical license, which the state contractors board issues for installing any insulation used to control heat or sound. The state's small-job exemption only covers work under $1,000 that needs no permit, done by someone with no employees on the job, so most wall jobs fall outside it.

How long does blown-in wall insulation last?

Properly installed cellulose can work well for decades, according to the cellulose industry's trade group, but that depends on the install. Walls filled loose settle and leave empty spots, so ask any crew how they make sure each cavity ends up full and dense, and know that our work comes with satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

Should I insulate the outside of my walls when I replace my siding?

If new siding is going on anyway, it's usually worth it, because continuous insulation on the outside, taped to stop air, costs only a little more than the siding itself. The rooms feel more comfortable and quieter right away. Tell me at the visit if siding is on your list, since it changes the plan for the walls.

  • Air sealing services

Worth adding when drafts keep coming even after the walls are full, usually where the house meets its foundation or its roof.

  • Basement insulation

For masonry or below-ground walls, which call for a different approach than blowing insulation into a framed wall.
